Like many of you, I’m addicted to coffee, but for me the addiction goes far beyond the caffeine itself. I adore the ritual. Every morning the hopeful sound of grinding beans fills me with anticipation for the day ahead. When the glorious smell engulfs the kitchen, this turns to excitement. THEN my most favourite morning coffee task is choosing the mug from which I’ll drink it. It may sound ridiculous, but for me this is no easy decision. It’s a direct reflection of my mood that day. Will I go for a kitschy Emma Bridgewater, a dainty Spode cup or an earthy, bucolic mug? It’s a tough decision, but once the right mug is chosen, and the first sip sipped, I’m ready to take on the day.
Fueling this obsession means that I need to keep my mug cupboard well stocked, which is why I was delighted to discover Julia Smith’s gorgeous range of earthy ceramics.
Based on the banks of Moray Firth in the Scottish Highlands, Julia’s textured designs are inspired by the landscape of her remote environment. She exhibits throughout the UK on a regular basis, and thankfully runs her own online Etsy store inspiring a bevy of delighted customers. I discovered her work on one of my favourite online boutiques The Future Kept, who exclusively stock her Mountain ceramic mug and coffee dripper.
Not only are her mugs a luxury to drink from, with every sip comes the added satisfaction that one is supporting a talented, independent UK designer.
